What to wear for a professional headshot

Dress like yourself.
On a good workday.

Choose clean, pressed clothes that fit comfortably and suit the people who will see your photograph. Simple colors, subtle texture and a well-fitting neckline are a useful starting point.

Start with where the photograph will appear

Your work sets the tone.

A law firm biography, a startup profile and a real estate agent’s introduction can call for different clothes. Start with how you want a client or colleague to recognize you. If your employer has a portrait guide, follow it and send the background, crop and wardrobe requirements before the session.

A suit can work for a formal leadership portrait; an open collar, blouse or simple knit may be a better fit for a relaxed professional profile. There is no need to adopt a style you would never wear to meet your clients.

A few choices that make the session easier

Fit. Color. Details.

Check the fit.

Try your outfit standing and seated. Check the shoulders, collar and neckline, and make sure you can move your arms comfortably. Clothes that need constant adjustment can distract you during the shoot.

Keep patterns quiet.

Solid colors and subtle textures are a useful starting point. Very fine stripes, busy checks and large logos may compete with your face. Bring a jacket or top that makes you feel at ease.

Keep it familiar.

Wear your usual professional hairstyle and makeup, if you wear it. Choose accessories that belong to your everyday look. Glasses are welcome; clean the lenses before you arrive.

You do not have to avoid white or black. Think about the complete outfit and the background rather than following a blanket rule about one color. A simple layer can add definition, and Alex can discuss the look with you.

Pack for the package you choose

One complete look.
Or room for a few.

Essential: prepare one complete outfit for the 30-minute session. Signature: bring up to three outfits for the 60-minute session. A formal jacket, a different top and a more relaxed look can give the finished selection different uses.

Bring clothes on hangers when possible, with the shoes, belt or accessories that complete the outfit if you want a wider portrait. A lint roller, comb and small touch-up kit can help you feel ready. You do not need to practice a pose; Alex will guide your angles and expression.

Before your visit

Keep preparation simple.

Should I wear a tie?

Choose the look you normally use with your clients and colleagues, or follow your employer’s guideline. For more variety, Signature gives you time for both a formal and a more relaxed outfit.

Can I wear my glasses?

Yes. If you usually wear glasses at work, they can be part of your portrait. Clean the lenses and tell Alex if you also want a photograph without them.

What should our whole team wear?

Agree on a level of formality and share a short wardrobe guide ahead of the shoot. Matching outfits are not necessary unless your company asks for them. Background and framing can provide consistency across the portraits.

What if I am not sure which outfit works?

Describe where the photographs will be used and contact Alex before your session. That gives you a chance to discuss the look without using your studio time to decide what to bring.

Keep planning

Your next step.
